Summary
The Renters' Tax Credit is a statewide program that offers property tax credits for eligible renters who meet certain requirements. Eligibility is based on gross household income compared with the amount paid toward the rent. For homeowners, the credit is capped at $1,000 per year. To qualify for the program, homeowners and renters must file an application by October 1st of each calendar year. The credit is paid as a direct check from the State of Maryland.
Eligibility Requirements
- The applicant(s) must have resided in the property for a minimum of six (6) months in 2021.
- The rented dwelling can encompass various types of residential accommodations, including mobile homes resting on pads, but it may not involve units rented from a public housing authority or exempt organizations.
- The applicant(s) is required to hold a legitimate and genuine leasehold interest in the property and assume legal responsibility for rental payments.
- For first-time applicants and those who have relocated within the previous year, it is necessary to provide supporting documentation such as lease copies, rental agreements, cancelled checks, money order receipts, or any other proof of rent payment. Other applicants may be asked to submit such documentation upon request.
- Furthermore, the combined net worth of the applicant, spouse, and/or co-tenants must not exceed $200,000 as of December 31, 2021.
