Gaithersburg Homebuyer Assistance Loan Program

Summary

The City of Gaithersburg offers the Gaithersburg Homebuyer Assistance Loan Program (GHALP) to eligible first-time homebuyers who purchase a home within the city limits. The program provides closing cost and down payment assistance of up to 10% of the sales price, with priority given to City of Gaithersburg employees, public safety workers, K-12 Montgomery County public and private school employees, and veterans. Applicants must have lived or worked in the City of Gaithersburg for at least one year prior to the date of application. Additionally, the city offers free homebuyer classes through its "Real Estate Effort for Affordable Community Housing" (REACH) program, which provides first-time homebuyers with down payment and/or closing cost assistance.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The household must have a gross income at or below 80% of the area median income (AMI) for the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
  • The applicant(s) must be a first-time homebuyer or not have owned a home in the last three years.
  • The home purchase price must be below the current City of Gaithersburg maximum purchase price limit.
  • The applicant(s) must complete a homeownership education program approved by the City of Gaithersburg.
  • The applicant(s) must be a legal U.S. resident and live in the home as their primary residence.
