Summary
The Homestead Property Tax Credit program aims to limit the yearly increase in taxable assessments for eligible owner-occupied properties. This program helps protect homeowners from experiencing increases in taxable assessments above the level set by local law, which, in the case of Baltimore City, is capped at 4% annually. The credit is applied against the taxes owed on the portion of the reassessment that exceeds the 4% homestead cap. Homeowners receive the credit directly on their property tax bill.All homeowners that have applied for a been approved for the Homestead Property Tax Credit is also automatically approved for the Targeted Homeowner’s Tax Credit which will be deducted from their total amount of city property taxes owed.
Eligibility Requirements
- The property must be the applicant’s primary residence.
- There is a one-time application that must be completed and submitted to the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation.
- For new owners, they will receive an application in the mail, and it must be submitted no more than 180 days after the property is transferred to them.
