The Maryland Historic Revitalization Tax Credit program provides homeowners with a state income tax credit for renovating historic homes. Under this program, homeowners may be eligible for a tax credit of up to 20% of the rehabilitation costs. The credit can be used for projects that aim to restore a structure to a functional state through repair or modification, while preserving the significant historic, architectural, or cultural features of the property, site, and surrounding environment. There is a credit cap of $50,000 over a 24-month period.Â
Eligibility Requirements
- The property must be the primary residence of the homeowner
- Total expenses for the project must total at least $5,000Â
- The property must be a single-family, owner-occupied residence
- The building must be certified as a certified historic structure. Certified historic structures have one of the following:Â Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, or; Â A contributing resource within a National Register Historic District, or;Â A locally designated structure or contributing resource within a local historic district that MHT determines to be eligible for the National Register
- The application must be submitted and approved by MHT prior to any work being done. Any work done to the property without approval will not receive the tax credit.
